The Vandalia Main Street Program
shall encourage and promote a Finer Spirit within the city and surrounding
community by unifying our citizens, preserving our heritage and
restoring the unique character of our downtown.
Vandalia
is the county seat for Fayette County with a rich history in politics
and is known as the place where Abraham Lincoln began his career.
Historical downtown Vandalia, the center of the Vandalia Main
Street Progam, offers residents and tourists the opportunity to
learn about the past through its tourist sites, as well as the
opportunity to enjoy fine restaurants and shop in unique stores.
Through the efforts
of committees related to downtown storefront design, special events
and promotions, economic restructuring and membership enhancement
and fundraising, the Vandalia Main Street Program has been offering
the downtown area the opportunity to return to the days when the
downtown was the true heart of the city. Formally designated as
a Main Street community in January of 1999, the program is dedicated
to revitalizing the downtown area. The Vandalia Main Street Program
welcomes you to our historic city and we hope you take the time
to enjoy not only our historical aspects, but our unique shopping
and dining opportunities as well.
